How to Protect Your Skin When You Are Traveling?
The stress of long and frequent traveling can show on your energy levels and mood, but it can show on your skin as well. Acne and a dull complexion following a long trip can be quite nerve wrecking, and it seems that no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to look your best following a long trip. Luckily, there are ways you can protect your skin from the stress of being frequently away from home by following our helpful tips given here.
1. Hydration
Risi-Leanne Baranza, the editor in chief of a beauty and spa industry publication called Palacinka.com suggests applying an intense moisturizing treatment the night before your trip. You’ll find that this method is especially helpful when you’re traveling by plane as plane cabins tend to lack adequate humidity levels which can dehydrate your skin through a process called osmosis. If you’re planning to travel for a long time, it is also a good idea to go without makeup and reapply your favorite moisturizer every once in a while.
2. Sun protection
Sunscreen is a must when you want to avoid a dull complexion after a long flight. You also get to protect your skin from the cancer-causing effects of UV rays. According to a study published in The Journal of Travel Medicine, female flight attendants have an increased incidence of skin cancer. While this may be partially due to their heightened exposure to the sun’s rays, it could also be due to other factors involved in flying as well. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to wear sunscreen while you’re traveling, especially if you’ll be sitting long hours near a window.
3. Exfoliate the night before
To make sure your serum or moisturizer is reaching the deeper layers of your skin, it’s a good idea to exfoliate your skin the night before your trip. But make sure to use a gentle peeling agent because deeper peels take a longer time to heal and make your skin more sensitive to external factors according to an article published in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. Considering that our skin surface loses up to 37% of moisture during a single flight, it’s a good idea to do whatever it takes to offer it the hydration it needs.
4. Purchase an anti-aging treatment
You’ve probably already noticed the aging effect long traveling has on your skin. Stress, fatigue, UV rays, dehydration, breakouts and all the other shackles of long trips can age your skin overnight. To counteract the aging effects of long-distance traveling, you should try out an anti-aging product such as Skin Element to offer your skin protection and anti-aging benefits while you travel. Serums enriched with antioxidants and other anti-aging ingredients work just as well to protect the skin from premature aging.
5. Eat a whole bunch of fruit
Fruits, vegetables, and herbs contain vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that nourish and protect your skin. Research shows that plants and their compounds have a strong protective effect on all cells in our body, and that includes the skin as well. Make sure to pick plant sources containing high amounts of vitamins C and E as these are powerful antioxidants known to elicit a protective effect on the skin. Black and green tea were also found in studies to make the skin more resilient to UV damage so make sure to bring a bottle of tea with you.
6. Skip makeup
Although you want to look your best when going on a long trip, let’s face it – your makeup is very likely to smudge and get ruined during a long trip. Other than that, heavy makeup may contribute to the drying effect of airplane flights so you’d be better off wearing a tinted moisturizer or going completely bare-faced. In case you really can’t leave your house without makeup, celebrity makeup artists A.J. Crimson suggests wearing a primer underneath your makeup to offer your skin additional protection and to help your makeup stay put. As traveling can be both physically exhausting and quite stressful, it can become quite the challenge to look your best while you’re on the road. However, this doesn’t mean that your skin is left to the mercy of long-distance flight and lengthy road trips. Making preventive measures and ensuring your skin is well-hydrated and protected before, during, and after a trip will ensure you keep looking your best wherever you go.
