Coorg, India | 7 Must Things to do for an Ultimate Getaway

From the sprawling ochre fragrance of sandalwoods and teakwood forest to the misty rolling hills to acres of coffee plantations, Coorg is one of the most popular hill stations in Karnataka. Nestled at an altitude of around 1525 meters in the Western Ghats of India, this picturesque hill station is also famed as ‘Scotland of India’. Coorg is also known as Kodagu and it is the largest producer of coffee in the country. 

Whether you’re looking for a family vacation, adrenaline adventure, or a secluded getaway, Coorg offers everything in all budgets. However, I’ve compiled the list of 7 must-do things in Coorg for your ultimate getaway based on my recent trip.

So, sit back tight, relax, and add these activities to your upcoming trip for an epic vacation!

Coorg: Must Things to do for an Ultimate Getaway

1) Enjoy the Scenic Drive

Coorg is one of the most visited places from Bengaluru for a weekend getaway. Thanks to the smooth, scenic, and well-maintained roads, the 5.5 hours ride is an experience in itself. There’re three routes to visit Coorg: The Kushalnagar Route, The Channarayapatna Route, and The Nagarhole Route.

I took the Kushalnagar Route which is via Mysore-Madikeri Highway. Whichever route you choose, don’t forget to create some amazing playlists as well as all the road trip essentials for an epic adventure.

2) Experience the Luxury Resort Life

If the luxury resort amidst nature is a state on your mind, you’re in luck! Coorg has a few luxury resorts for an ultimate vacation. Whether you prefer staying somewhere surrounded by the aroma of the coffee plantation and spices or the breathtaking views of splendid hills and rolling valleys or a jungle getaway, the luxury resort life is impeccable!

During my trip, I stayed at Birchwood Retreat resort surrounded by acres of coffee plantation and wilderness. I absolutely loved my stay and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an ultimate getaway. 

3) Go on a Coffee Plantation Tour

Coorg is well-renowned for its Coffee plantations. Whether you’re a coffee lover or not, no trip to Coorg would be complete if you won’t take a coffee plantation tour. What a better way to learn all the science behind one hot cup of coffee. An hour walking tour amidst a massive coffee plantation estate surrounded by sprawling fields of spices such as cardamom, peppers, and fruits along with a local expert.

4) Taste the local flavors of Coffee

Say aye to exploring the local coffee flavors of the highlands of Coorg. Visit AinMané Cafe for coffee tasting and learn about different aromas and flavors of local coffee.

It is also famed as “Kopi Luwak” in Indonesia, and now India has started producing Civet Coffee on a small scale in Coorg. The reason why it is expensive is because of its unique production method.

It is said that civet cats eat the flesh of the coffee cherries but not the bean. Then the enzymes inside the civet cat’s stomach enhance the bean flavor.  Later the poop of the civet cat is collected, processed, and sold in the market.

5) Visit Madikeri Fort

Madikeri Fort is an iconic landmark in the Kodagu district of Coorg. Built-in the 17th century, the fort has witnessed the rise and fall of several dynasties. Spend an hour, stroll around and soak the vibe!

Madikeri Fort is also a splendid place to take Insta-worthy pictures. Wear something in which you can twirl and voila! You’ll get some great shots.

6) Visit Abbey Falls

Located around 10 kilometers from Madikeri town, Abbey Falls is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Coorg. The Abbey Falls are located between the private coffee estate and a hanging bridge that has restricted access.

Spend half an hour at Abbey Falls and just soak the view around. Do wear comfortable shoes as you’ve to climb over 200 steps to get a splendid view.  

7) Buy local coffee, chocolates & spices

When in Coorg, do buy organic produce! Apart from being one of the largest producers of Coffee, Coorg is also known for its spices such as pepper, vanilla, cardamom, basil, oregano, rosemary, cumin, nutmeg, and much more. You can also buy homemade authentic chocolates as well as dry fruits such as cashews, figs, and raisins.
