Work, Study or Volunteer: How to Move to Australia for a Year?
Australia – the only nation in the world that is both a continent and a country. And what a beautiful country it is! Every year many folks from around the globe visit it. There are numerous tourist attractions, there is so much to do and see! However, more and more people come to the land down under and stay for a longer period of time – from a few months to a whole year and even longer. And you wouldn’t be here right now if you weren’t interested. So, let’s see how you can move to Australia and get a taste of the stunning land down under!
Work and travel option
Have you ever considered going abroad to work? But the thing is, this time you won’t just work and go back. You have the opportunity to work and see whatever place you want in Australia. According to numerous Work and Travel veterans, working your way around Australia and having fun is the best way to experience the land down under. There are numerous job opportunities in Australia. You don’t have to stick to Sydney only, for example. Since you’ll be staying in Australia for a while, you can switch jobs and cities. There are some great job opportunities in Outback Australia. Besides, the city life isn’t so cheap. There is much more to Australia than the well-known cities. Wouldn’t you like to see the Kakadu National Park when you finish your shift? You know that they call it ‘a timeless place’ which is also the largest national park in Australia (20000 square km)? Also, you have to see Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls along with their majestic canyon.
Being a student in Australia
Australia takes pride in the fact that it is home to over 600,000 international students, coming from more than 140 countries! What does that say about the educational system there? It’s pretty amazing! Take studying in Brisbane, for example. Firstly, you get the world-class education that you came for and secondly, you are in Brisbane! And there is so much to do and see in Brisbane. Fancy koalas? Why don’t you go and visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary for your study break? For all of you artists out there, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art is a must! You’ll be so disappointed if you don’t visit it. Then, there are awesome and modern student accommodations in Brisbane. You can choose a social household if you like intermingling but you can also go for a studio or one-bedroom apartment with a fully equipped kitchenette and private bathroom! What more can you ask for?
Long-term volunteering
This is another great way to visit and enjoy Australia. However, this option offers a special deal! You get to taste the land down under but you also get to help it! You’re probably wondering how. Well, there are various programs that involve getting into environmental conservation, marine conservation or work with children. Should you opt for the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll get to help Aussies preserve the world’s largest coral reef system. On top of that, the Great Barrier Reef is located in north-east Australia, off the coast of Queensland. Trust us, you are going to enjoy the view. Most importantly, wouldn’t you like to do something about the various problems harming the native flora and fauna as a volunteer? We believe that this is an honorable and just cause. You’ll be able to see it first-hand, but you’ll also get to do something good that will allow many others to experience it in the future as well.
Work and Holiday Visa
Before we start, we’d like to emphasize that this isn’t the Work and Travel program! The work and holiday visa is for young people (18-30) who want to go to a holiday and work in Australia for up to a year. The rules are a bit different than the Work and Travel program rules. But, it is nothing extremely difficult. After you’re granted your visa, you just need to set a departure date and book your flight. After that, you’re free to choose where you want to go and what you want to do. Do not forget to apply for your tax file number because you won’t be able to get paid if you don’t do it. We’d advise you to look for a hostel if you’re on a tight budget but you’ll have more options as soon as you start earning. Again, the point is to travel around Australia, find different jobs and try new stuff.
What are you waiting for? You have more than one way to get into Australia. Make this dream a reality!

April 7, 2018Interesting options here! I was VERY close to being a nanny in Australia but I had just finished a year in Germany and wasn’t quite ready to commit to being away for so long again. I’d love to visit one day though!
