Inn at Union Square, San Francisco | A Cozy Boutique Hotel

Looking for a cozy boutique hotel to stay in San Francisco, the Inn at Union Square boasts an incredible location along with plenty of other amenities for its guests. On my recent trip to San Francisco, I chose to stay in two different hotels based on the vicinity to different attractions and neighborhoods. The Inn at Union Square was one of the hotels where I stayed for a couple of nights and found myself in the center of the city where all the action takes place.

About The Property

The Inn at Union Square is owned by Greystone Hotels, an independently owned hotel management company based in San Francisco. Greystone Hotels acquired the Inn at Union Square in 2004, and the 2017 renovation was the second under Greystone’s ownership. The hotel features 30 well-appointed rooms and suites that exude the style and charm of old San Francisco.

The decor of the hotel is inspired by philanthropist and celebrated proponent of the art Alma Spreckels, considered by many as the “great grandmother of San Francisco”.

My First Impression of The Inn at Union Square, San Francisco

Old San Francisco historic home vibe!

Based on my stay, let me give you a virtual tour of the entire property!

The Inn at Union Square Hotel’s Entrance

The entrance of the hotel is small leading to the quaint reception area. It serves as a formal entryway, featuring oversized art pieces, soft benches, and accessories that give a touch of home.

The gentleman at the reception took our luggage and kept in the luggage room. He even offered us to wait in the lounge on the second floor until our room was ready. However, we preferred to hang out at Union Square. We got a call from the hotel’s reception after an hour to check-in and all the formalities were done in less than a minute before we got our keys.

The Lounge Area

The lounge area — one on each floor is a modern interpretation of the formal living rooms of San Francisco’s historic homes, most featuring fully-functioning wood-burning fireplaces, cabinet walls filled with artwork, vases, and sculptures, and new soft seating for socializing or enjoying a glass of wine. It is a perfect place to relax while waiting for check-in or after check-out if you have to take a late flight.

The Inn at Union Square’s Superior King Suite

As soon as we reached in front of our suite, I was impressed to see the unique ‘lion’ door knocker inspired by San Francisco’s historic homes door. All the guest room’s entry doors are personalized with its own color, number, and unique door knocker.

Our Superior King Suite had a separate living area on one side and bedroom on the other side connected by a passage to the bathroom. The artwork and the decor of the entire suite were inspired by Alma Spreckels’ love for dance, theatre, and French Baroque design. The suite had a positive aura around.

There was a bottle of champagne with chocolates and a personal note welcoming us. It was a very sweet gesture from the Inn at Union Square to pamper us!

Inn at Union Square, San Francisco | A Cozy Boutique HotelThere was a Beautyrest Victoria Park Plush King bed with a soft and comfy mattress. The sheet, comforters and pillows were neat and clean. There were charging points on both sides of the bed and plenty of other charging points throughout the suite. We had a wonderful sleep on all the days during our stay.

Our bedroom also had a closet area, in-room safe and complimentary water bottles. One of the things that impressed me the most was the INTELLITY In-Room Service Tablet. You can not only browse the internet but can also make any room service request at the ease of your fingertip.

There was a full-size mirror placed at the back of the bathroom’s door facing the toilet. I found it pretty weird as am not fond of seeing myself in a mirror while doing my business!

It was one of my favorite places in the entire suite to have my coffee/wine with a view and soak the hustle and bustle vibe of Union Square!

The Complimentary Breakfast

I love those hotels that serve complimentary breakfast to all their guests. The Inn at Union Square serves continental breakfast daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The breakfast features a fruit parfait, assorted slices of bread, fresh fruits, various confectionery items and beverages. It is just perfect to kick start your day!

Other Amenities

Apart from the complimentary breakfast, the hotel also serves complimentary evening wine and cheese at the lounge on the second floor. It is a wonderful way for guests to mingle in a new city. The hotel also provides high-speed free WiFi and complimentary incoming and outgoing fax services. Some of the paid amenities include room service from Morton’s Steakhouse, access to a nearby full-service health club, overnight shoeshine service, and valet parking.

    1. Union Square area is one of the best locations to stay at for sure during a visit to SF – ideal location, great shopping scene nearby and easy access to public transportation and cable car. That fact and the amazing amenities at this hotel would certainly make me want to consider staying at Inn at Union Square. I love the cozy boutique feel this hotel has and the lounge and rooms are clearly decorated so tastefully. Good to know that those free eats are available in the lounge on the second floor. It’s clear that the hotel really goes a long way to make their guests feel pampered.
