Ssaffron at Shangri-La Bengaluru | A Luxury Dining Experience
Shangri-La Bengaluru — The 5-star hotel is home to Ssaffron that offers authentic Indian cuisine in a delightful setting. This 18th-floor restaurant offers the sprawling scenic view of the city, scrumptious food and an incredible culinary experience to its guests.
If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you must be aware that I’m in India these days. I was recently invited for lunch by Shangri-La Bengaluru to experience their Indian cuisine at Ssaffron — one of the most renowned Indian food restaurants in the city. I was accompanied by my sister-in-law and we had a wonderful time.
Now let me give you a virtual tour of my entire experience!
The splendid view of Bengaluru from the 18th floor
As soon as we stepped inside the Ssaffron, we were greeted by the staff at the reception. Before going to my table, I took some time and admired the panoramic view of the Bengaluru skyline. Some popular buildings that I could recognize were Bangalore Palace, UB City and Vidhana Soudha.
Ssaffron provides alfresco and indoor dining options. The classy gold interiors are blended with muted hues giving opulent vibes and sets a positive aura around.
A drink with a view
If you’re a wine lover, Ssaffron has a wide selection of wines from the different parts of the world. For all the cocktails and mocktails lover, there’s something for everyone as per your taste!
I ordered this customized handcrafted mocktail that had mint, lemon, cucumber mixed in Indian blackberry syrup. It was very refreshing!
The lovely hostess also served fried and baked papads (a crisp Indian snack made with rice or black gram flour) along with three different types of chutneys/dips. My favorite was pineapple chutney. It was sweet in taste and perfect for people like me who can’t eat very spicy food.
Time for some appetizers
For appetizers, we ordered ‘Baigan aur Palak Patte ki Chaat’ which comprised crispy fried eggplant, spinach leaves, yogurt and tamarind coulis. I’ve to admit that I had only ‘Aloo Chaat‘ and ‘Samosa Chaat‘ in my life earlier. Therefore, trying ‘Baigan aur Palak Patte ki Chaat’ was an entirely new experience and I absolutely loved it!
Do try ‘Baigan aur Palak ki Chaat’ at Ssaffron for appetizers during your visit and you can thank me later! 🙂
The second appetizer that we ordered was ‘Palak Mewa ki Tikki’ which had stuffed spinach patties cooked on a griddle. It was very soft and every bite felt like it was melting in my mouth!
Authentic North Indian main course at its best
For the main course, we ordered ‘Balti Panner’ (cottage cheese cubes cooked with yogurt, coriander and onion) and ‘Dal Ssaffron’ (black lentils soup). We also ordered ‘Zaraja Paratha’ (flatbread layered with chili flakes) and plain ‘Naan’. The food had authentic North Indian spices and everything tasted scrumptious. Let the below picture speaks for itself!
Our divine dessert
After having such a delicious meal, it was time for some dessert. Based on our hostess recommendation, we tried ‘Apple Jalebi with Rabdi Gelato’. It had crispy apple fritter soaked in saffron sugar syrup with rabdi ice-cream on the side. It was mouth-watering and tasted absolutely divine!
The man behind Ssaffron’s kitchen
With over a decade of experience, Chef Mukesh Sharma is a man behind Ssaffron’s kitchen. He has not only curated the recipes from different regions of India but also given his personal touch by experimenting with different flavors. Chef Mukesh was extremely welcoming and he shared a lot of knowledge about Indian spices, organic food and even different kinds of chilis. Did you guys know that there are over one hundred thousand varieties of chilis across the world?
Apart from sharing his knowledge about the food industry, he also enlightened me with information on inventory planning, procurement of raw materials and kitchen operations and management. Being a Supply Chain & Operations girl, I loved knowing all the behind-scenes-action of the food and hospitality industry.
While talking to Chef Mukesh I realized that being a chef in a 5-star hotel is a herculean task. It is not just about making good food. From forecasting to inventory planning, from cost optimization to kitchen operation and from client servicing to menu designing, a head chef has to wear multiple hats at the same time.
The Verdict
If you love Indian cuisine, I’d highly recommend Ssaffron to anyone. With its excellent service, incredible hospitality and scrumptious food with the view, Ssaffron provides a wonderful culinary experience to all its guests. It is also one of the most Instagrammable places in Bengaluru for food photography. Whether you stay in Shangri-La hotel or not during your visit to Bengaluru but you should definitely visit Ssaffron to try some authentic Indian food.
Would I visit Ssaffron again?
Heck, yes! Would love to come with my husband for a dinner date someday soon.
