Mysore Palace | 7 Best Spots to Take Instagrammable Pictures
The majestic Mysore Maharaja Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace is an epitome of opulence and grandeur. Nestled in the heart of Mysuru city in the southern state of Karnataka, India, the Mysore Palace is one of the most popular photographed tourist spots in India after the Taj Mahal.
Though the palace was originally built in the 14th century, it underwent multiple changes to what it is today. However, in this post, I’m not going to provide the history lessons but share some of the iconic spots that should be on your radar to take splendid Instagram-worthy shots during your visit. Before I proceed, please note that only phone photography without flash is allowed inside the palace. However, you can use the camera outside the palace within the premises.
Mysore Palace Photoshoot: My favorite spots
The Indo Saracenic Revival Style architecture of Mysore Palace is an ultimate treat to the eyes. Every corner of Mysore Maharaja Palace is a piece of art. However, just to save your time, I’ve curated seven of my favorite spots for capturing Instagram-worthy shots at the magnificent Mysore Palace.
1) Garden railings opposite to Shweta Varaha Swamy Temple
The garden railing on the opposite side of Shweta Varahaswamy Temple is one of the most popular spots for photography. Not only do you get the gorgeous side-view backdrop setting of the Mysore Palace but also it is a perfect spot to beat the crowd in case you’re not fond of stranger’s photobombing.

2) Mysore Palace Ground
The massive Mysore Palace Ground is an epicenter where all the actions of the larger-than-life Dussehra festival celebration take place every year. No trip to Mysore Palace would be complete if you haven’t clicked any pictures with its panoramic backdrop setting to capture the palace glory in its full swing. All you’ve to do is just go as far as you can from the Palace Ground towards Jayamartanda Gate or from Main Gate to Palace. It also gives you a perfect opportunity to beat the crowd and click some gorgeous portraits for your Instagram feed.
3) In front of any Mysore Palace gates
The Mysore Palace has three gates — Jayamartanda or Main Gate to Palace, The South Gate, and The North Gate. The South Gate is for visitor entrance. During my visit, all the gates were crowded except The North Gate and fortunately, I got this gorgeous shot!
4) Doors of Mysore Palace
The aesthetically pleasing lavish sandalwood, teakwood, and rosewood doors of Mysore Palace with intricate designs give a sensory overload. Once you pass through them, you just can’t stop yourself staring! The doors are the perfect setting for Instagram feed.
5) Corridors inside the Mysore Palace
The corridors inside the Mysore Palace give the perfect old-world charm. The vibrant tiles, the artistic ceilings, and the arches just leave you spellbound. If you find the corridor too crowded during your visit, just wait for a few minutes. As soon as you find any secluded spot, take some quick snaps and you can thank me later!
6) A window looking at the Wrestling Courtyard
The guests are not allowed entry inside the Wrestling Courtyard of the palace. However, you can take some stunning Insta shots from one of the corridor’s windows overlooking the Wrestling Courtyard. Depending upon the outside light, you can even get a gorgeous silhouette shot for your feed.
7) The Public Durbar Hall
The dazzling Public Durbar Hall of the Mysore Maharaja Palace is another most iconic spot to be photographed at Mysore Palace. Though the visitors are allowed only to walk at the periphery of the Public Durbar Hall. All you need to do is find a spot between one of the arched ceilings supported by two symmetrical columns and capture some splendid portrait shots.
What to wear at Mysore Palace for a Photo Shoot?
As Mysore Palace is an embodiment of opulence that signifies the rich cultural heritage of India, I’d highly recommend dressing up like a queen. Wear something ethnic with bold colors if you’re planning a photo shoot. Just to give you a heads up that the palace premises are huge and the minimum time it takes to complete the Mysore Palace Tour is 45 minutes, so I’d highly recommend wearing something comfortable.
Important Tips to visit Mysore Palace for a Photo Shoot
- The Mysore Palace has a restroom in case you’re planning a dress change for your photoshoot. However, they charge 2 INR for using the restroom and they don’t give change. So, ensure you’ve 2 INR.
- The palace opens at 10:00 AM. Visit in the morning in case you want to beat the crowd.
- The professional DSLR camera isn’t allowed inside Mysore Palace. So, ensure that your phone camera is of excellent quality and has a sufficient battery and enough storage space.
- For clicking images outside the palace within the campus, you can use your camera.
- There’s also a clock room at the entrance where you need to deposit a camera if you’re going for the Mysore Palace tour.
