What To Wear In NYC If You Are Sightseeing In October?
If you have decided to visit the city that never sleeps during fall months, you need to be properly equipped. Fall in New York is crisp and cool, with temperatures from the 40s to the low 60s. Temperature changes are frequent, so make sure to pack a little bit of everything. Here are pieces you should definitely bring with you if you’re visiting New York in October.
Smart Layering
New York is a city of extremes when it comes to climate. Days can quickly turn from warm to chilly, so you’ll need to layer strategically. Bring summer clothes (without shorts) combined with layering pieces and a jacket. Jeans, dresses paired with leggings, light sweaters, and medium-weight coats are a great option for exploring the city at this time. A rain coat can also come in handy due to possible rainfalls.
Style tips
New Yorkers dress for comfort but always add a touch of style. New York stylists recommend staying away from tracksuits and white sneakers if you wish to avoid being marked as a tourist. Stick to elegant yet trendy looks with blazers and vintage dresses. For crispy weather, consider wearing a button-down under a baggy sweater, or a structured sweater with slouchy trousers and a softly tailored coat. With this perfectly undone look, you’ll blend right in. If you’re wondering about the color, black and grey are all-time favorites, but you can also experiment with funky patterns.
Footwear
When sightseeing in NYC, you’ll be walking a lot. Although the public transport system is very good, you’ll want to discover the city on foot because the experience is more intense while walking down the streets. Therefore, comfortable shoes are essential. However, you should avoid functional yet unstylish pieces, like running shoes. Strive for balance and opt for something like mid-heeled booties, ballet flats, oxford lace-ups, and slip-on brogues. Or simply go for basic sneakers, like Bensimon or Converse. A pair of sleek boots that are both supportive and chic will work great for any type of weather. If you must wear high heels, remember to put an extra pair of comfy flats in your bag.
Accessories
When it comes to jewelry, New York women often wear statement pieces, but there are those who like to keep things simple. Go for pieces that are classic, but slightly edgy, like a single gold necklace, a bunch of tiny rings, or one architectural cuff. Don’t forget a stylish pair of glasses to protect your eyes from the wind on chillier days. A versatile wrap or pashmina can be a useful extra layer. It’s also a good idea to bring your umbrella with you to avoid getting wet during moody October weather.
Protect your face
When you go sightseeing in the Big Apple, don’t forget to protect your face. For a long day outside, you should use a moisturizer with a broad spectrum and a sunscreen with SPF higher than 15. Additionally, consider using a face mask and exfoliators to protect and nurture your skin. For elegant and classy look, remember that less is more. A touch of makeup will give you a bit of NYC style, so put on a little foundation, blush, mascara, and lipstick.
Fall in New York brings many twists and turns weather-wise, but if you pack all the things you need, you will be ready for everything that comes your way. Remember to dress in layers, protect your face from the cold, wear comfortable shoes, and accessorize smartly. If you follow our advice, you will be ready to enjoy sightseeing in the Big Apple while looking and feeling your best.

October 12, 2016Totally agree with your points about the weather. I grew up in NJ and it’s very schizo. One day it’s 80, the next it will snow. I don’t understand. Layering is key and when in doubt, wear black! Lastly, no “I [heart] NY” shirts!!

October 12, 2016My sister lived in New York and she always joked that, during the winter months in NY, you could probably wear your PJs all day because nobody ever saw what your outfit was since you wore your coat everywhere!

October 12, 2016I love that you said to stay away from tracksuits & white sneakers. As a New Yorker, I would never wear those things! This is a great list. Comfort is key when you’re out on your feet everyday.
